Many traditional cultures, well into the Elizabethan and Renaissance era and beyond, have believed that tying, braiding and knotting the hair in a ritual manner literally works as an amulet or talisman, binding the wearer’s will, to protect against danger and to bring love and luck. Read the classic love-poem, “The Highwayman” to read about Bess, the landlord’s black-haired daughter (“O, Sweet black waves in the moonlight!”), plaiting a love-knot into her long, dark hair.
