The new fall season of TV programming wasn’t the only thing showing off its moves at the recent USA Network “upfront” presentations in NYC. Sofia Vergara was feral and fine in animal print — and also deliciously honey blonde. Hair by Mark Townsend for Starworks Agency.

Selena Gomez has got it awl goin’ awn in her new music video COME & GET IT. The songstress is only 20, but her hot red lipstick, smokin’ moves and exotic, Moroccan-Mexican headdresses and flow-y gowns make her seem way too much Go-Go Gomez for the princelet of bubblegum. Hair by Richard Collins for Tracey Mattingly Agency.

We love Zachary Quinto as Spock. Few men could rock those pointed ears and uber-tweezed brows in true Vulcan style. Now dig on his cobalt blue faux-hawk, which he revealed on the red carpet at the Costume Institute Gala at the Museum of Modern Art for PUNK:CHAOS TO COUTURE, dressed in dapper Vivienne Westwood vest and velvet slippers. Hair by Patricia Morales for Tracey Mattingly Agency. STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens May 17!

Janet Stephens created her "KNOTS" hair style inspired by the Greek Goddess of the hunt, Artemis., later known as Diana in the Roman world

Baltimore-based stylist and hair historian Janet Stephens at Studio 921 really knows her way around a bodkin (it’s a Roman hair pin, and she’s an expert in ancient coiffure, especially from the Roman era). Her love of mythology, combined with technical expertise and artistic sensibilities, make her a world-class go-to for hair which carries the grandeur of centuries past(http://www.studio921spa.com/profiles/JanetStephens.asp?LID=)

Many of Stephens’ ideas incorporate her love of sewing and stitching, skills once possessed by every Roman woman. Featured here, a creation called KNOTS. Perfect for spring, when romance is in the air, and also for Renaissance Faire season, When Maides Lose Their Heads.

She’s also a published author on the subject! Check out her fascinating musings on the regal hair of Rome in “Ancient Roman Hairdressing: On (hair) pins and needles” in the scholarly periodical, Journal of Roman Archaeology, Volume 21, 2008.

To create her KNOTS style,Stephens used JMPS products Awapuhi Sea Spray for texture and Hot Off the Press for heat protection, along with a Babyliss 25 mm curling iron, finished with Worked Up Spray.

Many traditional cultures, well into the Elizabethan and Renaissance era and beyond, have believed that tying, braiding and knotting the hair in a ritual manner literally works as an amulet or talisman, binding the wearer’s will, to protect against danger and to bring love and luck. Read the classic love-poem, “The Highwayman” to read about Bess, the landlord’s black-haired daughter (“O, Sweet black waves in the moonlight!”), plaiting a love-knot into her long, dark hair.

Intriguing, beguiling, perhaps literally bewitching. Perfect for rollicking and frolicking at a solstice merriment, as well as stalking a moonlight quarry with bow and arrow.

Half-up, half-down, melty chestnut twisted with a surprise splash of blonde, and even some braiding sneaking in for texture seems to suit the whimsical style of the FUNNY FACE premiere at Mann’s Chinese. Kate Beckinsale walked the red carpet with hair by Mara Roszak for Starworks Agency.

Because we love creative expression, we are more than happy to go over the top: cotton-candy pink wigs, party-frocks made out of bubblegum, purple poodles, glitter and sparkles and neon tiaras and whatever makes the world dance.

But when you’re Zoe Saldana, a sleek of satiny hair, a clinging black bodice and a blossoming of red lips on glowing nude skin: simply devastating.

Hair by Mara Roszak for the Starworks Agency. Ms. Saldana was snapped at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles.

JLD doesn’t take a lot of risks with her look. You will never see her as a blonde– thank God. But the classic, smooth, rich-girl espresso brunette swoop always pays off. Here she is looking sleek, with hair styled by Peter Butler, at the premiere of season two of VEEP. For the Tracey Mattingly Agency.
